Sentimental Rox is going to begin blogging our other most favorite past time and that is the garden.
It is something I eat from and feel so close to like "they" the plants are all my friends.
Tomato Plants |
I am an avid believer in growing what you need and use on a regular basis. For instance it would be madness for me grow something I don't eat or cook. I try to stick firstly to the staples of onions, potatoes, beans, spinach, parsley, thyme, carrots and following that the list is endless and it is hard to stop.

The garden is a major source of enjoyment and fulfillment to my partner and myself. Each day there is something to do and tend. I go and greet the garden each morning with so much joy. I am more than sure they know that I am there everyday. Everything has and is growing wonderfully.
Strawberries in Coke planters on the fence |
....oOo.....
The strawberries who I call Good charlotte berries are prolific. I have now made purpose built strawberry planters from halves of coca cola plastic bottles and attached them to the fence with zip ties that are removable. This way they are able to cascade down with their beautiful nutritious fruit ... they love it there!
The main focus of the day today is the compost heap. We have decided to re position it as it went where it was by default. The rest of the vegetable garden has a new home so now the compost will as well.
This afternoon we are going to go and hunt down some extra additives in the form of leaves and bark. I have a bucket of torn up newspaper for the worms to munch out on.The worms are fast becoming my best buddies around here. I have three worm farms under the side of the house and this enormous compost heap. Compost is the key to everything, it is just the broken down matter which the worms love to turn back into wonderful nutrient rich soil. Here on the coast as close to the salt air that we are the compost has been our lifesaver along with cow manure. We regularly visit a farm on Waterfall Way to retrieve bags of cow manure, this is the key also. This is amazing stuff and the garden just loves it. I add blood and bone and Organic lifter for all the requirements.I make a soup or tea from the cow manure as well. I use this to water the plants with as it needs to be well watered down a fair bit so as not to burn. This stuff folks causes the plants to look like they arrived straight out of Find-Horn itself. They love it. They grow like there is no tomorrow. I learned this from my old mate Jack who I called affectionately Dad... he wasn't but still the less if he was this is what a dad should teach. He had a garden to die for. He fed the family and the street and anyone who visited. He also was blessed with Edith who froze as much as possible for leaner times, blanching and freezing in margarine containers. I truly love how she made great use of whatever she had around her at the time. Perhaps my inspiration for doing very similar. Mother Theresa doesn't like waste and neither do I.
The compost will love the new home and the worms will love all their new food as we move their home up the hill a little way!Images by Mezza - Morgo Street Garden and bits and pieces
