The Gold many were looking to make is the internal process of gaining wisdom and operating with the mind of the infinite.  This is likened to the noble metals in their purification processes. 

Have you ever wondered why something works for one person and not another when the same process has been followed?  The gold is the difference, that gold is the wisdom of the Divine Mind.
